The Arroyo...A classic walk in the woods
The Trail Head at the end of Altadena Dr. That's JPL in the background. One of several bridges One of three stream crossings The stream in late June 2003 A great place to rest near the turnaround
Take Altadena Ave. all the way to where it dead-ends a few blocks west of Lincoln Ave. Park and walk down the path.
You'll see horses here on the weekends         Dogs should technically be leashed, but nobody really cares

This is one of the best easy hikes in the area. In fact, it's one of the few places in Southern California where you can walk for several miles into the mountains without really climbing. After you walk down from the trail-head, you take a right across from  JPL and you're on your way. Follow the road and bear to the left when you have a choice. There are three stream crossings before you get to the Glen Gould campground. You have now walked 1.5 miles. The trail stays pretty flat for another mile or so past this point. You have to rock-hop a little so wear shoes with a good grip.  map

 Lacy Park...As beautiful as ever.
The entrance to the park on St. Albans The playground looking west South half of the main field North half of the main field The road winds ever on
In San Marino. Enter from St. Albans or Virginia Rd., just north of Monterey Rd.
Lots of moms and grammas here on week days
Some years ago the city of San Marino closed this park on weekends. It's open again, but they charge admission! Three bucks a head for adults. It's still free during the week though. Open from 6:30 AM to sundown, this is a great place to walk. There are two loops. The flat center track circles the main field and takes about ten minutes per circuit. Add five more for the slightly longer outer loop. This is the closest thing we have to a real city park in this area.  map

The Rose Bowl...Three miles of pure motivation.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, bike racers work out here. They go by at about 25 MPH in a pack of fifty or more...IMPRESSIVE!

Looking south along 'West' on a typical summer evening.

The sign reads, 'No Stopping Anytime'...indeed.

Across the street...The Road Less Traveled.

This is really a beautiful place.

Take Seco off Lincoln or Rosemont off Orange grove and drop down into the Arroyo. If the lots are locked, park along West under the eucalyptus trees.

On any night of the week you'll find two or three hundred people walking the loop. People of all shapes and sizes come here to get trim or to stay trim. There are also bike riders, (they go by in huge groups two nights a week), runners and roller-bladers. It's a real happening. The circuit goes from the parking lot off 'Seco' north up 'West' to 'Washington', right to 'Rosemont', and south to 'Seco' again. Just follow the crowd...you can't get lost.

The Sam Merrill Trail...Not for beginners
A lovely local and her pals The Cobb Estate in the June gloom 2003 Three miles to Echo Mountain, site of the old White City hotel and connection between the Rubio Canyon incline train and the Mt. Lowe Railroad. Across the valley and up the trail...
Take Lake Av. all the way to the top and park on the street. Walk around the old iron gates.
don't forget the water...extra for the pooch
This was the Cobb Estate at one time, and now belongs to the city. Follow the driveway for a hundred yards and veer off onto the dirt trail at the water fountain. This is a good trail for getting the heart rate up. Pack water...there's none farther up. Best to do this in the morning when the sun is on the other side of the hill. If you can handle three miles of uphill, you'll get to see the ruins of the old "White City" hotel and the top of the Rubio Canyon incline railroad. Inspiration Point is another two miles up.  map

Sierra Madre's Mt. Wilson Trail...Another good heart pumper.
The trail head. Looking uphill near the bottom at 6:00 on a beautiful evening in late June 2003 A good piece of trail about halfway to first water. The view from midway up. There's a race track out there somewhere. The trail at dusk...heading back, a few hundred yards from first water.
From the 210, go up Baldwin to Mira Monte. Turn right and go about a block. Park by the small park and go up Mount Wilson Trail rd. to the trail head

This is where the annual race is held. It's a steep canyon with a slightly steeper grade than the Sam Merrill. The traditional turnaround points are "First Water" at about the two mile point and "Orchard Camp" which is twice as far. Unlike the previous hike on our list, this is an ideal afternoon hike. It's mostly in shade by then. Good, light weight boots are recommended for this sometimes rocky trail.   map
